Rhodiola is actually a plant employed in traditional medicine in Eastern Europe and Asia to boost mental and physical performance, stimulate the central nervous system, fight depressive disorders as well as improve sleep. The antioxidant properties associated with the flavonoids and organic acids contained in rhodiola are reported to be the reason for its results .The root extracts of rhodiola demonstrated potent anti-depressant actions and research completed in rats revealed cardioprotective and anticancer effects .
The use of rhodiola increased physical durability , mental abilities , and decreased stress-induced fatigue in humans .Preliminary data declare that it could be useful to prevent generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) . No serious adverse effects have been claimed coming from the use of rhodiola.

Rhodiola puts cardioprotective and nervous system stimulant effects by modifying the amount of biogenic monoamines including dopamine, nor-epinephrine, and serotonin in the brain. This modulation is believed to result from inhibition of the enzymes monoamine oxidase and catechol-o-methyl transferase which are a major contributor to monoamine degradation . Rhodiola also aids the transport of neurotransmitters in the brain. It is shown to help the body adjust to stressors by preventing release of catecholamine and increase in cyclic AMP levels in the myocardium, and through depleting adrenal catecholamine. The root extracts of rhodiola were proven to have potent anti-depressant effects by curbing monoamine oxidases (MAOs).

Rhodiola has nearly no side affects. Two which have been discovered included irritability and insomnia. Insomnia may be reduced by not taking it too late in the day or around bedtime.

A randomized trial of two different doses of Rhodiola Rosea Extract versus placebo and control of capacity for mental work.

In this piece of research 161 cadets, ages 19 to 21 years, were randomized to receive either a single dose of standardized rhodiola extract, a single dose that was 50% stronger than the standardized dose, or placebo. Researchers found that the cadets who received Rhodiola Rosea Extract
exhibited significant lowering of fatigue as measured by an anti-fatigue index compared to those on placebo. There seemed to be no change in the index between the 2 dosage groups. Nonetheless, these results can't be generalized. Further well-designed scientific tests are warranted.
